Triennial of Photographie Hamburg

The Hamburg Photography Triennial is an international photography festival organized every three years in collaboration with major museums, exhibition venues, and cultural institutions. The festival aims to highlight a broad spectrum of photographic voices both established and emerging, visible and overlooked that challenge prevailing narratives, reclaim forgotten perspectives, and build bridges across social and cultural divides.

The 9th Triennial in 2026 led by artistic director Mark Sealy will take place under the title Alliance, Infinity, Love – in the Face of the Other and calls for responsibility toward the Other. Alliance stands for the power of coexistence through the recognition of difference. The festival brings together diverse, divergent, and in-between voices in photography, thereby creating a space to renegotiate the familiar and the foreign within cultural production. Infinity refers to the boundless possibilities of being human and gives rise to a longing for a new visual paradigm in which silenced voices become part of a shared, interconnected reality. Drawing on the theories of Bell Hooks, Love is understood not as a romantic sentiment, but as a conscious and politically effective act. Love thus becomes a driving force for change and conceives of photography as a practice of community and cultural reparations.

City Curator responds to the topics in three chapters.
Infinity: Two visits to Aby Warburg's Image Collection of the History of Astrology and Astronomy at the Planetarium explore humanity's quest to read the stars to find our place on Earth.
Alliance: An artist talk with Luchezar Boyadjiev about his worldly photo collection of equestrian statues from which he 'removes' male rulers from their horses.
Love: A visit to the planetary mural of Cecilia Vicuña as part of the exhibition FIRE. From the Cosmos to the Commons at St. Nikolai Memorial, addressing current apocalypses and the visions of common futures.
